Beumer baggage handling system begins operation at Changi Airport
To prepare for the launch of the new system, Beumer conducted more than 100 trials, which roped in 2,500 airport staff and 1,500 volunteers.

Singapore’s Changi Airport has gone live with a recently deployed baggage handling system at Terminal 5. Deployed by BEUMER Group, a global supplier of automated baggage handling systems, the new system integrated the CrisBag tote-based sortation system and CrisBelt conveyor system from the company’s Crisplant product range.

To prepare for the launch of the new system, Beumer conducted more than 100 trials, which roped in 2,500 airport staff and 1,500 volunteers. The trials occurred during the operation readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) period ahead of the launch of Terminal 4.

Klaus Schäfer, managing director, BEUMER Group, said: “Changi Airport has been using BEUMER Group technology since 2002 when the tilt-tray sorter was installed in Terminal 2.

“The original contract was followed by the installation of a CrisBag system in Terminal 3 which operates as a dual baggage sorting system and an inter-terminal transfer baggage system between Terminals 1, 2 and 3.”

The new baggage handling system combines conventional check-ins with the CrisBelt conveyor with integrated hold baggage screening, a CrisBag tote-based Independent Carrier System (ICS), as well as overall controls and CCTV. Spanning 5,000 linear metres, the CrisBag system features an integrated Early Baggage Store (EBS).

Beumer’s system will reportedly enable airport staff to process 5400 bags per hour, which in turn will allow the airport to manage an additional 16 million passengers per year. Terminal 4 will reportedly increase Changi’s total capacity to 82 million passengers annually.
