Perkins+Will's Dubai studio is designing two stations for Hyperloop Transportation Technologies’ (Hyperloop TT) ultra-high-speed track in the UAE.
The US-based architecture and design practice was picked as part of parent company Dar Al-Handasah’s design and engineering team for the world’s first commercial hyperloop network.
It follows an agreement Hyperloop TT struck with Abu Dhabi real estate giant Aldar Properties to construct a full-scale commercial hyperloop system on the border between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Building work is due to begin in the third quarter of 2019.
Strategically, it will be located near to both the Expo 2020 Dubai site and Al Maktoum International Airport.
Perkins+Will’s design director for the Dubai practice, Morgan Fleming, told Commercial Interior Design the practice is working on two stations for Hyperloop TT. He also revealed why the megaproject is elevating the reputation of the UAE.
“I really see that project as pushing the boundaries of manufacturing, construction, and design. You can do things that are really 21stcentury in Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” he said.
Fleming joined the company in February 2019 and is taking over from Diane Thorsen, who confirmed she will step down on 27 June after setting up Perkins+Will's Dubai studio close to a decade ago.
Under Fleming's strategic direction for the studio – which has had to downsize in the last eight months – transportation and aviation projects are part of the focus to build a diversified portfolio.
