Dubai's fifth Hong Kong Lifestyle Expo to place special focus on African buyers

The fifth edition of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Lifestyle Expo in Dubai will be held on September 25 and 26.

This was announced at press conference organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) on Tuesday.

The two-day B2B event, which will be held at Hyatt Regency Dubai, will have over 100 exhibitors from Hong Kong and mainland China, announced Perry Fung, HKTDC’s regional director for Middle East and Africa.

Around 1,300 buyers are expected to attend the expo, which will showcase consumer electronics and ICT products, household products and electrical appliances, fashion and fashion accessories, as well as watches and clocks.

This year’s exhibition is run in partnership with the Trade Development Bureau of China’s Ministry of Commerce. The partnership will help cover a wider portfolio of products at the 2017 exhibition, said Fung.

The 2017 event will place a special focus on African buyers. The event will feature speakers from different parts of Africa who will talk about trade with Hong Kong, their participation in the Lifestyle Expo, and how it has helped their businesses.

Fung said that this year’s event has seen an unprecedented number of preregistrations from African buyers.

Buyers from Iran and other GCC countries are also expected to attend the expo.

The expo will help buyers source new lifestyle products, network and meet new contacts, Fung said.

UAE is Hong Kong’s biggest trade partner. ‘Hong Kong’s exports to the UAE grew 13 per cent to US$6.8 billion last year, led by exports of pearls, precious and semi-precious stones,’ a press release said.

“Most of Hong Kong’s exports go to the UAE. Jewellery and electronic products are two if the most exported commodities from Hong Kong,” Fung said.

The fifth Lifestyle expo will feature two special events: The HKTDC Frequent Buyer Awards 2017 and the Hub to Hub Business Summit.

“For the frequent buyers award, we will acknowledge UAE and ME traders who have contributed to the trade ties between the two countries,” said Fung

Dubai and Hong Kong share many similarities, Fung said. One such similarity is the important given to the development of the SME sector. It is the backbone of both the economies and the award will acknowledge companies and individuals who have played a significant role to developing trade and the SME sector, Fung said.

Another similarity is that both Dubai and Hong Kong are important hubs for trade to expand business to adjacent countries. “The Lifestyle Expo will provide the perfect setting for realising the hub-to-hub synergy and potential business opportunities that exist between the UAE and Hong Kong,” Fung added.
