Kuwait Oil Tanker Company has announced that it will add new vessels to its fleet, depending on the needs of Kuwait Petroleum Development.

As per the company’s ‘2020 fleet modernisation plan’, it will add eight new tankers; this will include three freight ships for liquefied gas, four freight ships for products and one freight ship for crude.

The company currently has 28 ships in operation; these include three for gas, four for products and 12 for crude oil.

Two of these will be retired by 2020 after reaching their 22nd year in service, said Jamil Al Ali, manager of Fleet New Building Projects Group at KOTC.

He also said that a bid to build three gas tankers has been awarded to South Korean firm Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), and a tender to build a supertanker will be issued soon.

Meanwhile, KOTC also has plans to build a third gas cylinder filling plant to meet the country’s growing demand and is currently in the process of fixing on a logistically-appropriate location, an official said.
